It was a relatively slow week post the Independence Day holiday weekend. The Federal Reserve released their June meeting minutes, which revealed little insight into when or how much the central bank may cut rates. As reported here after the meeting, the Fed dot plot chart is almost equally split between those that believe that two cuts are warranted this year and those that believe there will be fewer (10-9 respectively). Meanwhile, the CME FedWatch tool is predicting only a 5.2% chance of a 25 bp cut by the Fed at their meeting later this month, but a 60.4% chance of at least a 25bp cut when they meet in September. Of course, that could all change with the release of the June CPI and PPI data this coming week. If Core CPI jumps more than the consensus estimates of +0.3% month over month (vs +0.1% last month), the narrative on rate cuts could change dramatically.
